Apr 6, 2008 - We've moved! We apologize for the downtime and server errors lately. We have switched homes to a new host. There were a couple small hiccups during the transition but everything should be moved across now. Hopefully everything will be running nice and smoothly. | Feb 4, 2006 - Still thinking about trying Ric's Grill? After much consideration we finally returned Ric's Grill on 8th Ave in Calgary. I tried to go in with as open a mind as possible. We ate, we drank, we enjoyed the experience. The food was in a completely different league and the drinks were mixed by someone with enough knowledge to know a martini should be cold, not just moderately cool. The bartender was also able to find me some cocktail onions to garnish me gin martini which made me very happy.
There were still a few minor points that could have been improved apon and I'm not convinced it's worth the price. With about 20 restaurants in a 5 block radius (at least a dozen of which I'd consider great dining), you probably couldn't find one that would put a bigger dent in your wallet.
You'll have to make reservations if you want a table during dinner hours. It's a 5 minute walk for me so stopping in on a whim is easy but not once was I told a table would be available in less than 30 minutes. On the plus side, they validate parking for the parkade across the street.
| Aug 28, 2005 - Thinking about trying Ric's Grill? If you live in Calgary and are thinking of trying Ric's Grill on 8th you should probably keep thinking. I'm not sure which was worst, the food, the drink or the service. It's understandable to catch a glimpse of the bottom of your glass from time to time but any decent waiter or bartender should be asking you if you'd like another a while before that happens. Perhaps Ric's is striving to achieve some goal of social responsibility in providing their patrons with too much alcohol but the end result was a thirsty customer praying desperately for someone to bring anything liquid to the table. Although after tasting their martinis one might be thankful for the those long arid moments. A classic gin martini from the bar had all the appeal of a large glass of cat urine. Ric's is a chain of restaurants so it's entirely possible they're not all so painful to visit but it's doubtful that I'll ever return to that particular one. Normally I'd stop after saying my bit about the drinks but the food fared no better. At least they're consistent with their utter incompetence. | Mar 6, 2005 - The place to go for Martinis in Calgary I've had a lot of martinis at a lot of different establishments. It's rare that any one of those places causes me to take note let alone wow me to the point I feel they deserve a special mention.
So who managed to do it? None other than the Cactus Club off Mcleod in Calgary. Their menu has a martini for everyone. And if that wasn't good enough for you, the food menu can't be beat either. Simply put, one of the best dining and drinking experiences this lush has had in a long time.
If you live in Calgary you must take an evening and spend it at the Cactus Club. Don't argue. Just do it. | Dec 21, 2004 - Liquor Cabinet Search Judging by the volume of emails I've received on the issue over the past week a lot of you will be very happy to learn that the Liquor Cabinet Search should be fixed now. I'm hoping to tweak the functionality sometime in the future but in the meantime it should at least behave the way you'd expect it to behave. | | 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 |
